Established in 2026, ELLIS Italy is the national network of the Italian units of the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS), the pan-European network of excellence in artificial intelligence.

Building on Italy’s long-standing tradition of pioneering research in machine learning and AI, ELLIS Italy connects a distributed ecosystem of research excellence nodes deeply rooted in their territories and strongly integrated with local innovation systems. The network includes Unit Turin, Unit Modena, and Unit Genoa (funded in 2020), Unit Milan (2022), and Unit Trento (2024).

ELLIS Italy’s mission is to strengthen Europe’s leadership in AI research by advancing frontier science, attracting and developing world-class talent, and fostering strong, long-term collaboration between academia and industry. Through joint research initiatives and close interaction with local companies, ELLIS researchers contribute to technological advancement, competitiveness, and sustainable innovation.
